FILM SCANNING BRIGHTER AND MORE ACCURATE THAN EVER: Introducing the CineStill CS-LiteBrite+ 2.3x Light Enhancement & Color Negative Calibration Sheets

An affordable, easy way to upgrade your light source for digital camera scanning.

The CS-LiteBrite+ contains 2 light enhancement sheets and 1 color negative calibration sheet.

The light enhancement sheets are designed to increase directional light output for camera scanning, which reduces spill light and enhances diffusion uniformity. Use a single CS-LiteBrite+ sheet placed directly on any diffused light source to increase brightness by more than 60%, or use both sheets correctly to get 130% increased light output for diffused light sources. That’s 2.3X brighter, resulting in sharper and higher quality scans.

Additionally, the NEW Color Negative Calibration Sheet increases color accuracy with color negative film, allowing for higher fidelity inversion of negatives, making converting color negatives a breeze. Slide the color negative calibration sheet underneath the light enhancement sheets for enhanced color accuracy with color negative film.

These sheets work with 35mm, 120, and 4x5 film holders. Simply place on the surface of any diffused light source centered under the film holder. Though these sheets do not need to cover the entire light surface, they can be trimmed (as needed) to fit the dimensions of smaller light sources. A protective film on both sides of each sheet must be removed prior to use.

STEPS:

Trim to fit on light source (as needed)

Peel off protective film from both sides of Light Enhancement Sheets

Align all sheets using notches in top right with the optional Color Negative Calibration Sheet on bottom

Orient sheets flat on surface of light, centered under film holder to enhance directional light

Camera Scanning Considerations:

Camera Body

Just about any semi-modern, interchangeable-lens digital camera will work great for camera scanning. There are many mirrorless or DSLR options to choose from with large lens catalogs, tethered capture capability, and excellent image quality. Some high end cameras can even use pixel stitching to deliver extremely high levels of resolution.

Macro Lens

For camera scanning, the one real requirement is that your lens focuses close enough to capture the entire frame. For full frame cameras and capturing 35mm film, the term “1:1” designates a lens that will reproduce the 35mm frame exactly onto the full frame digital sensor. With crop-sensor bodies, 1:1 lenses focus even closer. Outside of reproduction factor (1:1), also look out for lenses that are sharp, have good color reproduction, limit internal reflections (modern coatings), and have very little vignetting. Finally, it’s generally best to use your macro lens stopped down 2-3 stops from wide open, as this gives a good combination of depth of field and sharpness.

Software for Negative Conversion

There are a few plugins and standalone programs for converting captured negatives into positive images. Some older and some newer, all of them try to harness the color science based in darkroom paper to various degrees. After all, even a professional lab scanner is essentially a digital camera and a light source. Most of the options presented here allow you to download a demo version to try before you buy and determine which one best suits your workflow.
