Over the years we’ve seen the success of the current family of CineStill film stocks. 800T, 50D, and BwXX have been a steady choice for photographers who want to tell their story through film photography. As the interest of analog photography has continued to grow, so has the demand for new options. Recently, supply chain issues and discontinuations have hammered certain film speeds that photographers want and need. 

But as the analog renaissance continues to propel forward, we’ve heard the clamor and craving for more film, more assortment, and we answered that call. We’re happy to introduce the latest film stock to our family... CineStill 400Dynamic!

Our goal with 400D was to make a film stock that was highly versatile, that can be used in an array of situations. Whether you’re an amateur or professional photographer. Wedding or events photographer, or even a street photographer, we wanted 400D to be your do-it-all film stock that you can keep in your back pocket. 

That 400D Magic

CineStill 400D is a fine grain film that delivers a soft color palette with natural saturated color and rich, warm skin tones. The film has a wide dynamic range, with a base sensitivity of ISO 400 but can be rated from 200 to 800, and it can be pushed up to 3200. This makes the film highly versatile, suitable for any lighting condition, any event, and can be used either outdoors or in the studio.

400D was specifically designed for still photography, to be processed in C-41 chemistry by any photo lab or at home. In addition, it also features a process-surviving anti-static lubricant coating that will make it an ideal film for both manual SLRs and automatic winding cameras. This new film will continue CineStill’s ongoing tradition of motion picture film emulsions made for still photographers, so that they can maximize their creativity and produce remarkable images that express who they are as a photographer.

Now, we won’t be asking you to physically make the film. But when you become a Film Maker, you play an essential role in the creation of film.

In our original crowdfunding campaign for 120, we awarded all those who backed and trusted our vision with the title of “Film Maker”. Simply because without them, the film would have not been made.

    The opportunity to become a CineStill Film Maker does not come around often. In fact, the last time we opened the doors to become one of our Film Makers was back in 2016 when we made 800T and 50D in true 120 format.

     

    What We Need

    With the continued support of our CineStill Film Makers and the analog community, we’ve been able to produce our initial first batch of 400D in 35mm and a limited supply of 120 medium format. Our crowdfunding campaign will seek to not only gauge the interest of a new ISO 400 speed color film in the market, but to also inform our manufacturing plans, so we can continue to meet the demand of the analog community for years to come. The more participation we see in the FILM MAKER Crowdfunding Campaign, the more we will know how to strategically invest our efforts to serve the community.

    Where We Are In The Process

    We have produced a small batch of beta test rolls to provide us with early samples of this film. This is what you see in this campaign. After seeing the quality of these test rolls, we began working with our manufacturing partners around the world to produce an initial production batch that would produce limited quantities of our production quality film in both 35mm and some 120 medium format. This timeline below shows more details of where we are and where we are headed, with a large scale production run in the plans for this Spring.

    Analog photography is in a renaissance. The renewed interest in all things analog has allowed film to thrive and grow in recent years. CineStill is determined to bring innovation and accessibility to a community that demands it. Color film has seen a supply gap as well as a few discontinuations over the years.     Q: Is 400D a new film?
    A: Yes, 400D is a new film CineStill has been developing for years with our manufacturing partners around the world.

    Q: Does 400D have rem-jet?
    A: No, but it does feature a process-surviving anti-static lubricant coating that makes it a great film for both manual and automatic-winding cameras.

    Q: Is 400D a repackaged motion picture stock without rem-jet?
    A: No.

    Q: What film is 400D based on?
    A: CineStill 400D is specifically designed for still photography. We worked exclusively with our manufacturing partners around the world to roll components found in many different films into one. This new film is based on advanced technology found in motion picture emulsions, and at the same time delivers features exclusive to still photography materials in both unexposed and processed states.

    Q: Are the 35mm cassettes DX coded for use in cameras such as point-and-shoots?
    A: Yes, the 400D 35mm cassettes are DX coded. If your camera does not allow you to manually set your ISO, it will read the DX code and adjusting your exposure settings accordingly.

    Q: Where can I process CineStill 400D?
    A: CineStill 400D was specifically designed for still photography, to be processed in any standard photo lab processor (C-41) or at home with any color negative chemistry.

    Q: Can CineStill 400D be pushed or pulled?
    A: Yes, like any film stock you can choose how you expose the film in-camera and decide how to process the film afterwards. 400D has pretty amazing exposure latitude as is. It can be exposed at EI 200 to EI 800 with normal processing, and be push processed up to EI 3200.

    Q: What will the retail price of 400D be?
    A: 400D 35mm and 120 will be available around the world at the same price point as 800T and 50D (Initial MSRP is $14.99 in the US).
